Beef Stroganoff

You Can't Beat Preservative-Free

We have all enjoyed the convenience of Hamburger Helper Beef Stroganoff, but not many of us enjoy the sodium and preservatives.  Here is a convenient (20 minute) recipe for low-sodium, preservative-free, tasty Beef Stroganoff.

Beef Stroganoff
  • 1/2 to 1 lb. hamburger
  • 1 t. garlic powder
  • 1 t. salt
  • 1/2 t. pepper
  • 1/4 c. flour
  • 1-1/2 c. milk
  • 1 (16 oz.) carton sour cream
  • 1 c. mushrooms (fresh or canned)
  • 1 bag egg noodles (we use Hodgson Mill Whole Wheat Egg Noodles which only contain 100% whole grain durum wheat and egg yolks)
Boil pasta.  Brown hamburger and drain.  Add garlic powder, salt, pepper, and flour to hamburger.  Mix well.  Add mushrooms, milk, and sour cream.  Stir until creamy.  Cook over medium heat until bubbly.  Mix in cooked pasta and serve.

A few tasty tips:
  • If you really want to stretch the meal further, toss in some cooked lentils or brown rice or whip up some easy drop biscuits.
  • We also like to cook up some peas and toss them in.
  • Whole wheat egg noodles are more expensive than regular egg noodles, but I feel the extra $0.50 is worth the added health benefits and they are so yummy too!
