"Grandpa" Burgers

A recipe that has been in my family for generations, "Grandpa" Burgers were a treat when I was a child and have become quite a treat for my children as well.  Even though this recipe does not stretch hamburger to its fullest, my family feels the cost is well worth it.  "Grandpa" Burgers are a fun twist on hamburgers using few ingredients, making it an easy recipe even for those who lack culinary ability.  Plus, it only takes 20 minutes to cook!

"Grandpa" Burgers
  • 1/3 c. ketchup
  • 1/4 c. yellow mustard
  • 1 to 1-1/2 lb hamburger
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 package hamburger buns (8 ct)
  • Shredded cheddar cheese (optional)
In a large bowl, combine ketchup, mustard, hamburger, onion, salt and pepper.  Mush all ingredients together with your hands (go ahead, dive in and get dirty!).  Lay hamburger buns open on an ungreased baking sheet.  Divide hamburger mixture evenly onto each bun half.  If desired, sprinkle with cheese.  Bake for 15 to 20 minutes at 350 degrees or until hamburger is cooked through.  Serve.

Note: If you really want to stretch the hamburger, you can use breadcrumbs or crackers.  Add more mustard and ketchup to keep it moist.  The final product will have more of a meatloaf flavor and texture.

Children love to help mush the ingredients together so this is a great meal for the family to prepare together.  Feel free to adjust the ketchup and mustard quantities to taste.  My husband prefers more ketchup, while I fancy mustard, so we tend to stick with the above recipe and drizzle on our favorite condiment after they are cooked.

This is a great summer treat when paired with Adult and Kid Cucumbers.  Finish off the meal with some No-Bake Oatmeal Cookies and you are sure to have a dinner the children will beg for!
