Grocery Budget Altering Find

Friday afternoon I made a quick run to the grocery store to pick up a few items to finish off the month.  These items typically consist of milk, bread and some produce.  Across from our usual store is a bread outlet store.  I have seen this building over and over again for the last two years and have never once thought about stopping in to see what it was.

Then, a few weeks ago, my father mentioned that he remembered his parents shopping at "day old" bread stores and saving quite a bundle on perfectly good bread.  This thought entered my mind and I decided to swing in and finally check it out.

I was stunned at what I found.

There, in a tiny little building, were tons of shelves labeled "89 Cents Each!"  On these shelves sat our favorite brand of bread, normally $4.00 at the grocery store.  I was floored.  I grabbed up four loaves and checked out as fast as I could for fear the apparition before me would evaporate and leave me standing in a vacant lot.

The bread is delicious.  I made a huge batch of french toast the next morning just because I didn't mind going a little crazy at just $0.89 a loaf.

The downside?  The bread expired in one week.  Because of this, I popped a couple of loaves in the freezer to keep them fresh until we need them.  But, just for fun, let's say they go bad before we use them.  As long as we use two of the loaves, and throw two away, we still got a great deal!  If we only use one loaf and throw three away, we broke even.  It's a no lose situation.

I encourage you to check your area for bread outlet stores or "day old" bread stores.  If your family is anything like mine and you go through bread like water, you will save a bundle.

Have you every shopped at a bread outlet?  What was your experience?
